Doreen Moore's School of Dancing

Donated by Sylvia Barnes

Doreen Moore’s School of Dancing was on Broomhall Road and Sylvia Barnes donated some dancing certificates and photos of the school which was one of many hubs of the local community.

Sylvia Barnes (nee Cartledge) received a tap dancing card after the dance exam with notes of improvements to be made by the examiner. There is also Sylvia’s tap exam certificate. Sylvia received 91/100 marks and achieved the grade of Honours for her Juvenile medal on 4th January 1955. The examiner noted that her ‘work was sometimes too heavy, dance not as good as other work, too laboured. Try to maintain expression.’

The four photos show Sylvia and other dancers in 1955 and are taken outside on Broomhall Road. Margaret Fearnley and David Sidall are in the pictures.
