Remembering the Shops of Broomhall
Past residents discuss the numerous local shops and businesses of yesteryear
In days gone by, Broomhall was a thriving hub of local shops and manufacturing businesses.
In these audio interviews with folk who grew up locally, a real sense of the bustle of the area comes through, and of what a close-knit community it was – where everyone seemed to know everyone else – and their business!
Roy and Trudy Ashton can clearly remember magnet manufacturers, sweet shops and Mrs Hibbotson’s chip shop… amongst many others.
Malcolm and Josie Moore also used to shop locally, and remember a ‘varmint’ family nearby!
Mary Roberts can remember her neighbouring families, Shaws the magnet manufacturers, Butcher’s the ‘beer-off’, the sweet shop, Johnson the hardware shop…
