Her father was Dr Nathaniel Phillips, a Pastor at Hanover Street Chapel and Upper Chapel in the city centre. He was an astronomer proficient in the physical sciences and a President of the Sheffield Literary and Philosophical Society. When she died in 1904 she left her money to Rev. Gamaliel Milner, one of the twelve church burgesses of Sheffield.
