The Broomhall Centre appealed to many different age groups, either through the carnival or events going on in the centre and in wider Broomhall. Teenagers still often converge outside the building to play basketball. There was also a crèche and a pensioners club, plays and homework clubs. • I was a Community Youth Worker at the Broomspring Centre, as it then was, for a year, between 1982 and 1983. I ran the After School Club, holiday playschemes, unemployed sessions, and helped set up Broomhall Canoe Club. I used to take the kids camping and walking in the Peak District, swimming, and on trip[s to the seaside, as all the regular stuff. I was only in my early 20’s at the time, otherwise I don’t think I would have had the energy for it!

There were two different pensioners groups then, as some of them didn’t get on, and had to be kept apart!
